The Truth About Air & Water by Katherine Owen

This is the second book in the Truth In Lies series. I've written both This Much Is True and The Truth About Air & Water as standalones. Why?

Well, with This Much Is True, I wrote a book that is really two books in one, since I hate cliffhangers, and I thought I was done with Linc and Tally. This Much Is True became a bestseller on Amazon in September of 2013 and I've gained quite a few new rrrreeeaaadddd-uhs since then. The constant drumbeat for more of Linc and Tally became louder and the fact that these characters wouldn't leave me alone led me to this latest novel, The Truth About Air & Water which released August 24th, 2014, a whole year later.

Prolific, I am not. Mostly, because I am angsty writer and develop plot lines that do not follow somebody else's work beyond the boy meets girl theme. Secondly, back to why I wrote this a standalone, I rose to the challenge to write a storyline where new readers could start here and not be completely lost about Linc and Tally's love history. Clever, indeed.

But having said all of this, I would encourage readers to read This Much Is True first because so many readers are saying this very thing and there are many of you reading both novels straight through. Awesome!

And, as part of my gratitude and general enjoyment at seeing this phenomena, This Much Is True is on sale at an incredibly cheap price on Amazon so you can do so. Believe me, I appreciate readers spending a half day or so reading my stuff. Okay, a day. These are full-length novels and This Much Is True is incredibly long, but if you can find the place to cut TMIT down; you just let me know.

Onward. If you are familiar with my writing, you know I don't take it easy on readers. Like ever. So if you're looking for the happy trope with a weak heroine who falls for the bad boy and then the two proceed to have sex for the latter half of the novel on every page so that you actually grow tired of it all and start skipping pages, I'm not for you. If you like your fiction to dive deep and include more complex plot lines where you can actually experience the character arcs just by reading the story because you have actually been transported to their world, this book might be for you.

What I am most proud of with The Truth About Air & Water is I take Linc and Tally to a whole new level and really delve into the what if question: what happens next when you have everything?

Readers who've read my work, especially This Much Is True, are now holding their breaths. Ah!!!!! I hear you.

I don't want to give the plot away. And I thank my readers who have already read The Truth About Air & Water for not doing so either in their rave reviews for this one.

Let's just say when everything's perfect, KO comes along and shatters it.

As I tell all of my readers, prepare properly. Advil, wine, tissues, and perhaps an even stronger drug of your choice may be in order. And, as Lincoln Presley would say, "Do what you must, Princess."

Additionally, you cannot have a problem with the f-word because I don't. If you've checked all those boxes discussed above, read my work and enjoy the novel and hang on. Also, this has been coming up...do not start this novel right before you are planning to go to bed. You will be up all night reading. There is a point in the middle where you will not be able to put it down. Just sayin'. Epic, indeed.

"This Much Is True" gets a Playlist

The "Playlist" for This Much Is True follows the chapter listing fairly closely (by mood, of course). Why did I create a playlist? Well, music plays a big part of my writing process and these songs were played extensively over the past year and a half. I have a huge playlist of over a hundred songs that evolved down to these twenty songs as the story came alive and the characters became 3-Dimensional because they do that in my mind.

But then, he sees the girl from Valentine’s Day and can’t quite hide his disappointment when she appears to look right through him and not remember him at all from the horrific car accident, he saved her from months before. He vows to learn her name at least before he leaves. What’s the harm in getting to know this girl? What’s the worst that can happen?

They share this incredible connection… She can’t quite contain her attraction for this guy who cooks for her and helps her through more than one of these panic attacks that seem to come out of nowhere these days. It’s amazing that they share the same fears about falling, failing, and losing as well as an endless quest for perfection. He with baseball. She with ballet. He makes her feel something again. “You make me want to be a better person, Elvis.” 

He can’t get a handle on his feelings for this incredible girl, even though he soon learns she’s lied to him about practically everything. He forgives her because he hasn't exactly told her about the tragic circumstances in which they first met from months before that she obviously doesn’t remember. He ignores the ramifications surrounding their difference in age that could potentially impact his baseball career and reputation; he’s already too far gone over Tally and soon enough her grieving family as well. So he asks her to wait for him because he wants to wait for her.

Fate soon tests these star-crossed lovers in all kinds of ways... Ultimately, Linc must choose his baseball career and carry on his father’s legacy because there is no easy way to explain a fateful liaison with a seventeen-year-old ballerina just graduating from Paly High when he is five years her senior.

Tally encounters heartbreak for the first time over a guy and vows to forget all about Lincoln Presley. Focusing solely on ballet, she experiences her own meteoric rise to fame that soon has her making the hard choices for her career, too, and unexpected sacrifices she never planned for.

And yet, despite the lies being told to protect the other, in lieu of the trappings of fame that manage to keep them apart, and in spite of the deception by those they’ve come to trust the most; one truth remains.

I've had this incredible week--the unplanned kind that you start and you're too far in to turn back? Yes, that kind of week. I don't put her on sale very much because this particular novel is often misunderstood. Don't read it, if you have a problem with infidelity and love triangles or books that will make you cry. Do read it, if you like roller coaster stories where it's hard to guess what happens next. That is this novel. And yet, after reading through the story multiple times for the edited updates, (because; yes, I'm a comma queen) I have to say I LOVE the story of Ellie and Michael. Don't judge. I think this story is powerful and true and moving. Yes, there's tragedy, but out of the ashes of these broken people is immense strength and love. So, if you haven't read Not To Us, you should. It's fiction for adults. There's bad language and shocking story lines, but it will carry you away for an afternoon. Enjoy!

My answer when asked... What was the basis for Not To Us?

I wanted to explore a few heavy themes and started with these types of questions: What happens in a relationship that seems to have everything? What happens when one is betrayed? By a husband? By a best friend? What happens to a person when they're confronted with a life-threatening illness? Does he or she strive to change their course? Choose a different path? These story lines intrigued me and became the basis for Not To Us. In this novel, both Michael and Ellie strive to do the right thing, most of the time, but they both respond to grief in the same kind of way, seeking consolation from others, not trusting each other, or themselves. I wanted to write about how tragedy can change or alter a person's life, and even, perhaps, change their behavior and choices.

Here's the cover update coming for the print edition of Not To Us. I went back to an earlier photograph for the back cover. Note the darkened sky and the whited-out couple holding hands as if they're not really there. This captures the epitome of Michael and Ellie, I think. Also, see the shadowed hands below? I love that. Their shadow exists even when the rest of them doesn't. It captures the essence of their love story quite well. Love the front cover because the guy looking at the blond is truly a reflection of Michael and Ellie. And, you say you haven't read it yet? You should. Oh, I said that already; didn't I?

When I See You - On Sale at Most Online eBook Retailers
